Graphic Design or Web Designer: The Comparison

Which profession to choose? Graphic Design or Web Designer? Let’s chat about the two professions and see the differences between graphic design and web design and which profiles fit these two options?

The two branches are brothers, born from the same principles of design and, in a way, have the same objective: to inform and enchant. The Central Coast Web design, for example. This company basically works on the same principles as “a painter” for example.

Both work with graphic elements and drink the same techniques of harmony, composition, diagramming, contrast, style, and application of colors. What changes, in my view, is the media in which they apply for their work.

And that changes almost everything.

Graphic Design or Web Designer? Technical differences

Let’s talk about the technical differences and the attentions given to them? Gradually you will become familiar and we will enter the differences of professional profiles, ok?

Technical media differences: Paper versus Canvas

Be it the paper, an acrylic plate, an adhesive, or even the fabric of a T-shirt, the work of graphic design will end up embedded in a real, solid, and palpable object. The biggest problem with this is that once it’s made, you can’t go back. Embroidered the wrong logo on the shirt? Throw away. Was there a lack in the subtitle of the folder whose circulation of a thousand copies has already been printed? Recycled garbage and money are thrown away.

I can’t get enough of repeating: proofreading is fundamental for those who work with print, that is, Graphic Design.

But how rewarding it is to take that folder you made and run your finger over your artwork to feel the finish! How delightful to see your logo on the facade of a real store! How you feel like crying when you take that business card you made with a UV finish and turn it from side to side under the light to see the shine of the varnish! It takes work and there is a lot of risks when closing the file, but the result is always, always very rewarding.

Not that the web designer feels less when entering a website that he created. It can be about taps or fuses, you will send the link to your friends and write below “hey, I did it”. And when you start to read the compliments in the comment fields… My God! You feel famous, a celebrity!

The advantage of the canvas in relation to the paper is that it is possible to fix what I affectionately call “shit”. Is the logo at the top of the page the old version? Okay, up right now. Is the product photo wrong? Good, I already changed. Gosh, can you change the color of this menu? Of course my friend. Press F5 in five minutes.

What the web designer does not need to undergo in relation to the changes after the work is delivered, he does have to sweat his shirt to adapt the site to screens of different sizes, mainly to the PC screen and cell phone screen (and this without counting the adaptation different browsers). The first screen is large and lying down (landscape mode), the second is small and in portrait mode. Come on, create a website that, in addition to being beautiful and functional, so it has to be in a standing rectangle and in lying of different sizes.

And the web designer can also commit his “shits”. You need to stick to the details, especially in photo edits. The image on the screen tends to attract more attention than on paper, perhaps because of the brightness or colors in RGB. Either way, poorly made cutouts in a photo or coarse effects even in small details are more noticeable than on paper. In short, being very detailed and refined using Photoshop is essential.
